The Art of Giving Back
Curator Caren Helene Rudman, with the help of juror Kelly Mathews, has orchestrated a small group show with artists who incorporate an element of service in their work, through a specific project or in their concept, practice and/or intent. We are thrilled to exhibit works created by a group of the amazing teens and adults at Keshet*. TAC hopes to facilitate partnerships to build on giving back to the community.
Activist and Highland Park native, Wendy Abrams has uncovered the humanity behind the “signs” that homeless people create to communicate to the world, asking for help. As most of us walk by, or at the least give loose change, we seldom stop to look at the words, the meanings, and the care taken to express their voices. Wendy does not simply walk by, but rather she stops to interact, to notice the details, from the colors to the themes. She pays for the signs, often building relationships. Wendy’s intention is not merely to raise awareness about the homeless issues in our country, although it does, but rather she hopes to invoke the need for empathy, to imagine what you would write if you had a sign asking for help?
Project Resist Fear
In our efforts to build on the convergence of between art and service, we are excited to present Chicago artist, Kelly Mathews, Project- Resist Fear; “a multi-phased effort to confront our fears.”
